Chapter 10

~ Mariana ~

My time with Chelsea has made me further realize that Springhill isn't the place to be anymore. Since everything with Jace and spending more time with Chelsea, I have little desire to return. Chelsea can make even the most tedious duties exciting and worthwhile. These educational games I’ve been doing with her have also been so fun for me.

Maybe it’s the bonding experience with her that’s making me feel that way. Being here makes Springhill seem so dull and irrelevant. It’s so full of life here. Everything I want… is here.

Peace. Happiness. Quality times. Love.

There is a small voice that won't go away as I sit here and take in all of this delight. It keeps pestering me, demanding to know if it's okay that I'm beginning to develop feelings for Jace. I'm starting to feel sentimental about more than just any old home. This is the exact same house that Delilah lived in, reared Chelsea in, married to Jace in… up to when she passed away.

Which gives me unsure feelings of if this is even okay. I had been considered a friend to Delilah. My close friendship with Jace brought along a good connection and friendship with Delilah. When she got really sick, she had privately told me to look after Jace and Chelsea. I, of course, didn’t think anything of it. Maybe because I thought she would get better.

But she didn’t, leaving me to help pick up the pieces of Jace’s shattered heart.

He may have his ways about him… but he’s such a great man. His heart is so large, and he cares so deeply for others. It is admirable that he places Chelsea's happiness ahead of his own. He has an uncanny ability to make people feel at ease and understood. It is as if he can read people's minds and is always there in the most reassuring manner.

Jace is undoubtedly unlike anyone else. Recently, our conversations have taken a dramatic turn, as have our bond. We've begun analyzing our future plans in depth that involved a connected future, no longer separate lives. It's as if we can't help but become excited about the upcoming opportunities.

So why do I feel so wrong about this? Maybe I should be putting a stop to this.

“Mari, you can’t find me!” Screeches Chelsea’s excited voice that snaps me out of my thoughts. I look around and remember that I’m in the hallway next to the foyer, by the stairs, as Chelsea’s voice floats down from upstairs.

We’re in the middle of hide-and-seek, and I’m hoping this will distract me from my confusing thoughts. I’m trying to focus on the good here. The things that make me undoubtedly happy. But confusion has a way of twisting your thoughts around.

Chelsea’s excitement is infectious as I hurry upstairs to begin my search for her. I’ve already found her twice, with her hiding behind the curtains in the living room, then underneath the dining room table. Maybe she has improved her hiding place finds.
